Android, Cupcake, Smoke and Mirrors

Well it's over a week since the first reports of the long awaited update to the Android operating system first started circulating, and still no sign, or any confirmed reports of anyone actually having received their 'Cupcake'.

Android v1.5 - nicknamed 'Cupcake' after the development branch is set (indeed, if it actually exists) to become probably the best mobile OS - obviously as it's loosely based around Linux - not Windows, and as a consequence will have a larger geek following, and development base.

So, where is this mythical beast?  Nobody seems to know.

Mark Hewitt (Endgamer), author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the G1 Google Phone" has an interesting take on this.  He has questioned whether the rollout delay has all been a deliberate marketing strategy.  If he's right, this signals the utter contempt Google seem to have developed for their customers base - adopting the misinformation mantra as previously honed by Microsoft.

Here in the UK the Android powered Google phone (Branded the G1 - basically an HTC Dream) is only offered by T-Mobile.  Recent reports that T-Mobile are looking to find the fire escape and exit their UK operations doesn't bode well.  If they're already preparing to pull down the shutters, there's little motivation to encourage and develop their customer base - or more importantly, ensure knowledgeable qualified support.

So, still waiting - but no longer with the anticipation that it'll actually arrive.
